Tyneside Badminton Centre offers a badminton racket restringing service, with stringers trained by Paul Kennedy, one of the most experienced and respected stringers in the country. All rackets are strung using a Victor Computerised Electronic Stringing machine.
Rackets are typically strung at tensions varying from 18 psi (pounds per square inch) to 34 psi. Low tensions (18-20 psi) generate less power and because the string moves around more there could be some loss of control when hitting the shuttle. Low tensions do have their place however when stringing older rackets or cheaper beginner rackets that may be made of weaker materials. Moderate to high tensions (21 – 28) are usually the most recommended, generating more power and offering more control as the strings are more “locked together” by the tension. Tensions above 28 psi are largely unnecessary for the amateur player and should be used with caution as there is more chance of breakages. Note by far the most limiting factor in a player’s power generation is their technical proficiency – excessive string tensions will not solve this (but it will be expensive)!
