Earlier this year, the Newcastle Badminton Partnership (NBP) offered clubs in the area funding to develop new programmes in a bid to increase participation of badminton across all ages and ability levels.
Now the funding has been issued and programmes have been established, NBP have published a case study on how the funding has impacted participation in the area.
Impact Overview
- £800 of funding awarded to local clubs and venues
- 75 individuals impacted across all delivery
- 5 additional club players in Northumberland
Newcastle Medicals Badminton Club
Newcastle Medicals Badminton Club were awarded £250 to deliver a beginner’s coaching course during the summer.
Their funding covered court hire, shuttles and marketing of the sessions which ran at Tyneside Badminton Centre and were delivered by Northumberland’s Development Officer – Joe Robinson.
The club had a total of seven players attend the sessions, combined with four current players and three new players, two of which have joined the club ahead of the season.
One person who attended has started attending Tyneside Badminton Centre’s women only session.
A club representative said: “The beginner’s coaching course that was funded by the Newcastle Badminton Partnership was a huge success and we are very grateful for their support.
“Feedback from the sessions was overwhelmingly positive and the participants had huge amounts of praise for Joe’s coaching and the centre as a venue.”
Tyneside Badminton Centre
We were awarded £300 to develop and run badminton sessions exclusively for women.
The sessions now run twice every week, Tuesday evening and Thursday morning, delivered by the Northumberland Development Officer – Joe Robinson.
Sessions run for two hours and combine skills coaching and match-play for players of all abilities.
Since starting the sessions, 38 individuals have attended, and one player has transitioned into Newcastle Chinese Badminton Club who are based at the centre.
The Northumberland Club
The Northumberland Club were awarded £250 to run badminton taster sessions.
In April, nine players attended the first taster session, while in June 21 attended.
Having enjoyed the taster sessions, four players have now joined the club, and three juniors joined their summer badminton course and are set to take part in another course this autumn.
