Today, we are showcasing the amazing work of local sporting providers across the region, all supported by the Disability Sports & Leisure Forum.
Last year, the Disability Sports & Leisure Forum for the North was launched to provide, promote, and deliver physical activity across the community, while offering a communications channel to update and share information and experiences.
After just over a year, the forum has helped facilitate a number of opportunities for coaches and participants in the North East. Here are just a few of them.
In June, the forum held a disability awareness course, led by Smile Through Sport and supported by Sport Newcastle, where 17 individuals participated representing 12 sports.
Later that month, 30 players from Newcastle Rugby Foundation’s learning disability rugby team, supported by Premiership Rugby and RFL, headed to the Gallagher Premiership Final at Twickenham to play in a half time showcase event.
The school summer break was jam-packed with Tyneside Badminton Centre leading ‘SEND Into Sport’ events, supported by StreetGames, with ten participants getting involved with their two sessions.
Smile Through Sport also offered SEND / disability specific summer holiday camps, with over ten sessions every week of the holidays for people across the region.
The Inspire Hub, Tyneside Badminton Centre’s inclusive youth group, has grown from strength to strength since launching in 2024, with 20+ regular attendees across the weekly sessions, as well as offering their participants with off-site activities every half term.
This only shows a brief insight into the remarkable work of the forum and the dedicated contributions from all the providers in the North East, but there is so much more happening across the region.
